coffee grounds scalp scrub

How-To:
Ingredients: Used coffee grounds (cooled), A carrier oil (such as olive oil, coconut oil, or jojoba oil). Optional: A few drops of essential oil (like peppermint, lavender, or rosemary) for fragrance and additional stimulating benefits.

Instructions:

Collect coffee grounds and let cool. In a bowl, create a 1:1 ratio of grounds to carrier oil. Lets aim for a teaspoon total! You want a paste-like texture that's easy to apply. Perform a patch test. Massage gently into scalp, let set for a few minutes then rinse and condition.

    • A coffee grounds scalp scrub can invigorate the scalp, promote blood circulation, and remove any buildup that might be affecting your hair's health. Let's be real though; washing coffee grounds down the shower drain regularly seems like a weird move so please note that only a tiny amount of ground coffee is necessary to pull this scrub off!  Use it as a scalp treatment once a week or as needed. Be cautious not to overuse it, as excessive exfoliation can irritate the scalp.

the science

The idea that caffeine may be beneficial for hair health is based on several scientific studies and mechanisms:

  • Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) Inhibition: One of the primary reasons for hair loss is the hormone DHT, which can shrink hair follicles and lead to hair thinning. Caffeine has been shown to inhibit the effects of DHT when applied topically to the scalp. It does so by blocking the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into DHT. By reducing DHT levels, caffeine may help prevent hair loss.
  • Increased Blood Circulation: Caffeine is known to stimulate blood circulation when applied to the skin. Massaging caffeine-infused products into the scalp can improve blood flow to the hair follicles. Enhanced circulation means better delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the hair roots, which can promote hair growth and overall hair health.
  • Follicle-Stimulating Effects: Caffeine has been found to stimulate the hair follicles directly. In vitro studies have shown that caffeine can promote hair shaft elongation and prolong the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle. This suggests that caffeine may encourage the growth of stronger, longer hair.
  • Antioxidant Properties: Caffeine is also known for its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help protect cells, including those in hair follicles, from oxidative stress and damage caused by free radicals. By reducing oxidative stress, caffeine may contribute to healthier hair.
